Arthur J. “Bret” Bretnall Jr., 82, of Millville, New Jersey, passed away February 22, 2026 after a brief hospital stay.
Born February 27, 1943, Bret was a lifelong learner whose curiosity and steady dedication shaped both his career and the many lives he touched. He pursued his education with determination graduating from the College of William & Mary and the Wharton School of Business. His natural talent for analytical thinking led him into programming and special project work across a range of industries, including positions with Bank of New York and Hewlett Packard.
In 1978, he joined the family business, where he devoted more than 45 years of leadership, commitment, and expertise. Throughout his career, he was actively involved in the marine industry and was a proud member of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) helping to shape standards and strengthen the marine industry he cared deeply about. Bret also believed strongly in his community and served on several local boards.
Bret had a passion for his faith. He immersed himself in the churches he attended and was always studying to strengthen that faith. Bret also had a passion for flying and boating. He embraced the challenge and the peace in the skies and on the water. His sharp mind, thoughtful approach, and problem-solving abilities earned him deep personal and professional respect.
Bret is survived by his loving wife, Susan Cherwien; his daughter, Kimberley Carrell and her husband Eugene Carrell; his sons, Arthur Bretnall III and his wife Seren Morey, and Andrew Bretnall and his wife Francesca Poliseno; and six grandchildren. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father and grandfather, and a respected member of the local business community and the marine industry community.
The memorial service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church; 2384 E. Landis Ave; Vineland, NJ on April 11th. The family will receive visitors at 10:30am with the service to follow at 11:30am.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Bret may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Vineland or to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Largo, Fl.
Arrangements are in the care of Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home, Vineland.
