Daniel Michael Cherwien, age 88, passed away on July 28, 2025 after a brief illness.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, and always a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, Cherwien spent his life with music, teaching and guiding young people. He began his teaching career in Sumner, Iowa and moved onto Madison Twp. High School then to Cumberland County College.

He was the first professor hired when the college opened and served as a math & computer science professor, department chair and acting Dean of Instruction.  Elected Professor of the Year by the student body six times, he also started and conducted the college chorus from 1966-1970 and again in 1982 until his retirement 1998. In 1989, he was elected an Outstanding Teacher by the N.J. College Faculty Program. Cherwien for six years served as the Cumberland C.C. Golf Coach taking the team to the National Junior College Championship in 1977. He also served as the Women's Volleyball Coach, Vineland Church League Basketball Coach and a Little League Farm League Coach. From 1968-1975 he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader of Troop 43.

The Lutheran Church was always an important part of Dan's life where he served as council president, a deacon, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. He held a Bachelor's Degree from Luther College, a Master's Degree from Montclair University and did doctoral studies at Texas Tech University. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling with his wife, Arlene. Together they visited more than 20 different countries.

Dan is survived by Arlene his wife of 55 years, William (Deanne), Douglas (Stacey), Sue (Bret) and Mark (Ellen) Cherwien and Richard (Gail), Ron (Donna) and Chris (Patti) Curcio. Along with  twelve grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Michael and Mathilde Cherwien, sister Virginia and brother Walter.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 9th at 11am at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2384 E. Landis Avenue, Vineland, 08361. Friends will be received from 10-11.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
