IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward Francis
Duffy, M.C.J.
November 18, 2018
Edward Francis Duffy, age 64 of Vineland, began his life in Philadelphia in 1954 and passed away there in hospice care following a three-year struggle with ampullary cancer on Sunday, November 18, 2018.
Born to the late Francis A. and Edna (Haury) Duffy, Ed moved with his family from Philadelphia to Vineland, NJ in 1960 and on to Millville, NJ in 1967. He attended Millville High School, where he met Eileen M. DiPalma in April 1971. He and Eileen married in 1974.
He attended LaSalle College in Philadelphia, majoring in English in the same department where his father had previously taught and graduated magna cum laude in 1976.
Ed earned his Juris Doctor from Rutgers University School of Law and passed the New Jersey bar exam in 1979. Eileen and Ed moved to Vineland, NJ in 1980. Their two children Evelyn and Matthew were born in 1985 and 1989.
Ed opened his solo law office in Vineland in 1983 and became a prosecutor in 1998. He loved the creative energy, mental work and performance that went into this crucial part of the justice system. Over the course of his long career he also served as a solicitor, negotiator, mediator, code enforcement prosecutor, arbitrator, and court appointed guardian.
In January 2016, following his initial treatment for cancer, Ed was appointed a municipal court judge in Maurice River and Commercial Townships. In February of 2016 he was appointed a Central Judicial Prosecuting Judge in Cumberland County. Ed loved every facet of being a judge. His time on the bench was the culmination of his career and life in the law.
A Rotarian since 1991, Ed believed in the organization's motto of "service above self" and always endeavored to live by it. He never hesitated to share his deep gratitude for the connection to the community Rotary brought him. Ed served as president of the Vineland Rotary Club three times, in 2002, 2012, and 2013.
Ed also served as President of the Cumberland County Bar Association in 2006 and as a member of the District I Ethics Committee, Supreme Court of New Jersey (2012-2015).
He was an active and enthusiastic volunteer throughout the years with Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scout Troop 36, and the Vineland Regional Dance Company.
Ed and Eileen loved to travel together, planning unique, detailed trips throughout Canada, the Western United States, and Ireland. Together they visited dozens of national parks. Ed was also an avid reader throughout his life. In recent years he most enjoyed reading about the history of places he visited in the West and keeping up with the New Yorker magazine..
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Ernest DiPalma, and his best friend Martin Hoag.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years Eileen M. (DiPalma) Duffy of Vineland, his daughter Evelyn M. Duffy and wife Jennifer Young of Washington D.C., his son Matthew E. Duffy of Philadelphia, his sisters Theresa Duffy-Diament and husband Ernest of Cedarville, Kathleen Duffy and husband Glenn Murray of Florida, and his brother Michael Duffy and wife Joanne of Millville. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Mary DiPalma, his brothers-in-law John DiPalma and wife Kari, Paul DiPalma and wife Margaret, sister-in-law Kathleen Galarza and husband Angelo, and many nieces and nephews.
