Obituary

Elizabeth Mason, 103, of Media, Pa., formerly of Vineland, died Friday of natural causes. Mrs. Mason, her husband Richard and her parents were among the wave of German Jewish immigrants who settled in Vineland and established a poultry and egg farm that they owned and operated through the 1940s and '50s. They retired and closed the farm in 1960. Mrs. Mason went on to serve as a volunteer aide at the Vineland Public Library for many years. Born April 25, 1908, in Mainz, Germany, to Hugo and Marie Scheuer, Mrs. Mason and her husband at one time owned the largest distillery in southwestern Germany. They emigrated to the United States in 1938, and were joined by her parents in 1940, the year they settled in Vineland. In 2001, she moved to Martins Run, a senior living community in Media, Pa. Mrs. Mason was known to family and friends as extremely compassionate, generous and devoted, as well as a great hostess. In her later years she was fond of world travel and of caring for aging friends. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at Alliance Cemetery, Norma, arranged by Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home, Vineland. Mrs. Mason is survived by her niece, Elaine Marston of Millville, two grandnephews, a grandniece and a great-grandnephew. In her memory, donations may be made to the VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund at vitascharityfund.org, or The Arc of Cumberland County - Evanoff Center, 1680 W. Sherman Ave., Vineland.
