Obituary

George O. Grey, age 87 of Buena, NJ, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Jefferson Hospital, Washington Twp., NJ.

George Oswald Grey was born on September 25, 1933 to Balthazar and Maude Grey in Kingston Jamaica. He is one of eight children who were incidentally, all born at home on Hannah street. They were raised on a farm where he learned discipline and hard work at a young age. Georges' father was a pastor which meant they spent every Sunday in church. This rich culture of spirituality and hard work help to mold him into the dynamic man we know him to be.

At the age of eighteen George decided to leave home to become a soldier in the Jamaica Defense Force. In the late 1950's he migrated to Florida to continue his work as a farmer. He continued north to New Jersey where he drove delivery trucks for the Pipitone's Farm. In 1964 he went on to obtain employment from Wheaton Plastics in Mays Landing. During his time there, he worked as a hydraulic and process mechanic. He was highly respected by all of his coworkers for his hard work, discipline, and loyalty.

George went on to build a life for himself with the purchase of his home in Buena, New Jersey. He would go on to meet a feisty little woman, Eunice Hamilton. They courted for seven years, during this time George would go on to father his two daughters Elizabeth and Jeanine Grey. George and Eunice were married in their beautiful home on March 30th 1985. They enjoyed spending time together, especially playing cards and dominos. George would always beat Eunice when they played cards. She would cry after losing and tell him she lost her daughter's milk money. George would feel bad and then let her win back her money. They would remain married for 27 years until Eunice's passing on October 16, 2012.

George had very memorable characteristics. He loved telling stories and jokes to everyone. Every time you saw George regardless of where he was going there was Chapstick in his pocket, a toothpick in his mouth, sunglasses on his face, and a cap on his head. Some of his favorite hobbies include fishing, hunting, and crabbing. His favorite pastime with family and friends was eating crabs, clams, and drinking beer. George had a passion for photography his entire life. This led to him having his own studio in Jamaica as well as New Jersey. He also enjoyed cooking and making wine. His famous dishes include: Italian subs, steak sandwiches, potato salad, spiced beef, and sweet potato pudding. Regardless of what was broken in the house George had a tool to fix it.

George and Eunice decided to convert their garage into a bait and tackle shop to support Georges' passion for fishing. After retiring from Wheaton Plastics in 2004, George was able to focus his time and energy into his business. Grey's Bait and Tackle was a staple in the Buena community. Many residents traveling down route 40 to the shore would stop to purchase needed supplies for their trip. Grey's Bait and Tackle also provided fresh fish, crabs, and clams to many loyal customers in the community.

George Grey was very outgoing, boisterous, straightforward and always had a shotgun in the trunk; which earned him the nickname "Shotgun George". George was a distinguished self-made man who stood up for himself and did not fear anyone but God. He transitioned from life to eternal life on February 16th 2021.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his sister Inez, daughters Jeanine and Elizabeth, stepchildren Larry, Neville, Charmaine, grandchildren Harmonie and Xavier, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
