Helen Jessie Muessig, age 99 of Vineland, passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Lincoln Specialty Center, Vineland. She was residing at Spring Oak Assisted Living of Vineland at that time.

She was born in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Walter and Helen (Seavor) Petschke of Vineland. Along with her husband Bob (Edward Robert), they were the owner and operator of Muessig's Gulf Service on Landis Avenue. She loved reading, nature, the beach in Ocean City, NJ and traveling and touring with her husband and family for many years.

Helen was predeceased by her parents, her brother Walter Petschke, sister Janet Klein, her husband Bob and nephew Steve Brown.

After Pearl Harbor was attacked and America entered the War, Helen was driven by patriotism to serve her Country which she was able to do when Congress authorized the formation of the WAVES, Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service, and subsequently, enlisted in the WAVES in 1942. She was the first woman to volunteer for service from her home state and served as a Radioman 2nd Class until she was honorably discharged on November 9, 1945.

During her service, Helen met her future husband Bob, who was serving in the Army Air Force and entered into what would be a happy 65 year marriage where she had four beloved children; Robert Muessig and his wife Carol of Vineland, Roger Muessig and his wife Sue of Mullica Township, Linda Halter and her husband Woody of New Market, MD and Cynthia Szatkowski and her husband Richard of Mt. Laurel, NJ.

In addition to her four children, she is survived by her eight grandchildren; Chad and Kevin Muessig, Samantha Cangiano, Lori Kambeck, Bill Halter, Krissi Boehmer and Brian and Tim Szatkowski, and by her 15 great-grandchildren; Brandon, Derek, Tyler, Natalie and Dakota; Dash and Zeke; Jackie and Ryan; Emma, Lexi and Kyli; Ethan and Alex and Layla. Along with her nephew Mike and niece, Diane.

Family and friends may gather on Tuesday, July 13th from 10 to 11 am at the Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home, 1024 E. Landis Ave. Vineland. The funeral service, along with Navy Honors, will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will be held for immediate family at a future date.
