Helene B. Land (Belawsky), age 93, passed away on Thursday morning, June 12, 2014 at the home of her daughter, Andrea Land, with whom she resided. Helene was born in NYC to Andrew and Mary Belawsky. The family moved to Richland in 1924. Helene attended schools in Buena Vista Twp. and graduated from Vineland High School in 1939. She was the wife of the late Charles Land. Helene is survived by her partner Anthony Rusenovich of Carol Stream, IL and her children, Camille Johnson (Drew) of Vineland, Jessica Perna of Anderson, South Carolina, Andrea Land of Vineland, Jeffrey Land of Ashland, Oregon and Carol LaTorre (Alfred) of Vineland. And also by her sister Jeanne Giglio of Buena, NJ. Her 9 grandchildren; April Billick, Jared Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Tyson Perna, Nicole Perna, Lora Carletto, Edward Carletto, Jennifer Frie and Alfred LaTorre, Jr. 5 great-grandchildren; Ava and Laina Billick, Cara and Evan Johnson and Nathan Frie. Also many nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her brother, John Belawsky of Richland, NJ. Before retiring, Helene worked for the Vineland Board of Education at the school transportation office and as Principle Clerk-Steno at Vineland High School as secretary to principal, Miss Rossi and later to assistant principal, Miss Ostrander. Prior to working full time, she sold cosmetics at house parties for several years. After graduating high school, Helene did secretarial work in various business offices in the city of Vineland (Unsworth Motors, Goodrich Tire Store, Zukerman Wholesale Groceries and GLF Chicken Feed Supplier). Mrs. Land was an active member of the Girl Scouts in Cumberland County and Johnstone School (Troop 12) and was a scout leader for a short time. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Theodore Roosevelt Post #4. She was a member of the National Association of Educational Secretaries, and associate member of the NJ Educational Association and an active member of the Cumberland County and Vineland Educational Secretaries Association. Helene was also an ordained deacon of the church and sang in the church choir. When she resided in Florida she was an active member in the Presbyterian churches there. Helene also worked with the Cumberland County Board of Elections in Vineland. During the war years, Helene was a member of the local chapter of the USO. The group would often go to Atlantic City, where the large hotels had been converted into hospitals, and visit the wounded soldiers. While living in Florida, she was instrumental in forming a club for divorced and widowed members of the Punta Gorda Isles community called "Half a Pair". Helene loved music in all forms-classical, popular, instrumental and vocal. She also loved the movies and theater and most of all dancing. She was an avid reader and in her retirement years wrote her memoirs entitled "Out of the Attic". Helene enjoyed spending time with her family and was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 18th at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church, 8th St. and Landis Ave., Vineland. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Vineland. The viewing will be held on Tuesday evening from 7:00-9:00 pm at Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home, 1024 E. Landis Ave. Vineland, and again on Wednesday morning from 9:00-11:00 am at the CHURCH.
