Obituary

Helyn Ostroff, age 93 of Bridgeton, NJ passed away on December 1, 2021 at Inspira Vineland.

She is survived by daughter Shelley Brownstein (Marc), son Robert Ostroff (Beth), and grandchildren Dara Scalora (Sal), Steven Brownstein (Zmart), and Austin Ostroff. In addition Helyn is survived by Great-Grandchildren Marlowe and Esme Scalora, and Zuri and Zoe Brownstein. She was predeceased by her husband Morris Ostroff, siblings Harry Popovsky and Matilda Smalley, and parents Samuel and Clara Popovsky.

Mrs. Ostroff was born in Rosenhayn, NJ, and graduated from Bridgeton High School with the class of 1946. She graduated with a BA in Social Studies from Montclair State College in 1950. She earned her Master's degree in the Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant Program in 1971, from Glassboro State College. Helyn completed the Certification Supervision/Curriculum Development Program at Glassboro State College in 1984.

From 1950 to 1967 she taught at various grade levels at Woodbine and Upper Deerfield Township Schools, and Bridgeton High School. Helyn served as a school Social Worker for the Cumberland County Rural Schools Consortium from 1967 to 1968.  After returning to Upper Deerfield Township Schools as a Learning Disabilities Teacher/Consultant in 1968, she advanced to serve as the district's Child Study Team Coordinator and Special Services Director until her retirement in 1993.

Throughout her life Mrs. Ostroff was active in serving her community. She was president and a charter member of Temple Beth Hillel of Carmel, NJ where she also co-chaired their Ritual Committee. Helyn was also a co-chair of the South Jersey Jewish Historical Society and a United Synagogue Youth Group Leader. She was a volunteer for Wheaton Village's Folk Life Center and Red Cross. Throughout her career Mrs. Ostroff was actively involved In the NJ Education Association and in retirement Helyn served as President of Cumberland County's Chapter of NJEA Retired Educators.

On December 3, 2021 the family held a private graveside service at Beth Abraham Memorial Park in Rosenhayn NJ. The service was conducted by Rabbi Bradley Bleefeld and Cantor Marlena Taenzer.

A memorial service will be held in her honor in the Spring of 2022.
