Obituary

Margit Larsen Holsworth, 89 Naturalist, Birder Margit passed away peacefully on April 24, 2013. Born and raised in Hawaii, she was the last surviving child of 6, to L. David Larsen, and Katharine Wood. She met and married her husband of 65 years, Charles W. Holsworth, when he was sent to Hawaii during WWII. She attended schools she still loved in Hawaii, Hanahaoli and Punahou, then Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, and graduated from Univ. of Hawaii upon returning there during the war. She was predeceased by her husband, who passed away 3 years ago May 3; her beloved cat Nemo last summer; and her whole Larsen family, with her last sister passing just weeks ago. Margit and Charlie settled in Vineland in 1954, where they raised 3 children, Charles "Chip" L. Holsworth of Pittsburgh, Katharine B. Holsworth of Vineland, and David C. Holsworth, who lives in Bellefonte, PA with his wife, Deborah Boscaino. She has 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren spread across the world, but always so close in her heart. She was also "Mom" to many others in South Jersey, and she was truly loved by so many of her nieces and nephews. She was a woman of so many talents, a child psychologist by degree; an exceptional mother; a daycare and substitute elementary teacher by profession; a true naturalist that learned the name of all the birds, flowers, trees, ferns, mushrooms, rocks, and even mosses. She was an exceptional illustrator, drawing and painting from early childhood through 2 days before her heart gave out. She took bird walks, gardened, and attended Qi Gong exercise classes up until her very last hours, never skipping a beat. She always wanted to share her love of nature with others, leading nature walks; identifying birds, trees, flowers and even weeds; taking rock collections, that she and her husband had amassed, to show children and adults; tending large vegetable and flower gardens to share with other; and always getting friends and family to look at the birds on her feeders. She loved to be outdoors, and there was hardly a day that went by that she was not at least walking her yard to see "what was happening". She volunteered for so many activities in the nearly 50 years she lived in Vineland, from Girl Scout leader; Church Youth Group leader; making public nature trails; and as a Deacon and an Elder in the First Presbyterian Church; a pillar of the church and community for all her years. She was an integral part of the clothing closet and food distribution at the church. Those who attended were met by her warm smile and helpful, compassionate manner, often using her knowledge of the Spanish language to assist the patrons there. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 4 at 2:00 pm, at the First Presbyterian Church, 800 E. Landis Ave., Vineland, with the Rev. John D. Fordyce officiating. Burial will be private. Donations in memory her honor may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Vineland or the N.J. Audubon Society.
