Maria (Markiewicz) Szarek-Scalzo, age 89, of Landisville passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012 at home, surrounded by her loving family. Maria was born in Rudawka, Poland and later married Karol Szarek in Germany before moving to United States and settling in New York City. She worked in Housekeeping for Local 32B-J Maintenance Union in N.Y.C. for over 30 years. While working , she and Karol raised their seven children together. After retirement, she moved to Landisville to be closer to family. Maria attended catholic church services for many years. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening and sharing time with her family. Maria was pre-deceased by her husbands Karol Szarek and Angelo Scalzo, also a son, Joseph Szarek. Survivors include two sons Charles Szarek and his wife Mildred and Edward Szarek, all of Queens, NY. Four daughters, Helen Murawski and husband Stanley of Newfield, Christine Filipkowski and husband Adam of Landisville, Jean Zubko and husband Joseph of Newfield and Sophie Szarek of Landisville. Also 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 17th at 10:00 am from the Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home 1024 E. Landis Ave. Vineland. Burial will follow in Siloam Cemetery, Vineland. Visitation hours are Monday (tonight) from 7:00-9:00 pm and again on Tuesday 9:00-10:00 am at the funeral home.
