Obituary

Marlin J. Tompkins, age 82 of Vineland, passed away unexpectedly at in his home in Vineland NJ on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

Marlin was born in Sayre, PA on February 14, 1943 the son of Roy and Naomi Tompkins.  Marlin graduated from Athens High School, Class of 1961.  Upon graduation, Marlin joined the United States Air Force and served his country for four years.  Following his service, he enrolled in Bloomsburg University and completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.

Upon graduation from Bloomsburg University, Marlin moved to Philadelphia and taught school for a number of years before beginning a long and successful career with the Pennsylvania Department of Rehabilitation serving as a Rehab Counselor.

Following retirement from the PA Department of Rehabilitation, he and his partner Bill started their own very successful interior design, furnishings and accessories business – Boxwood & Ivy – based in Mauricetown, NJ through 2014.  The house and design studio was a regular highlighted feature on the Mauricetown Christmas Historic House Tour for over 10 years.  Upon retiring from Boxwood & Ivy, Marlin and his partner moved to Vineland NJ.

Marlin was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Norman and his partner and husband of 46 years Bill Snyder.  Marlin was also proceeded in death by brother and sister in-laws, Philip Jr. and Emily Snyder, Herbert and Joyce Snyder and brother-in-law Thomas Leahy.  He is survived by brother Dale (Judy) Tompkins of Shoreham Vermont, sisters Judy Leahy of Sayre, PA and Elaine (Ken) Tomb of East Smithfield, PA.  In addition Marlin is survived by many nieces and nephews who he was very generous to.  Marlin loved having family visit and enjoyed showing them the sites of Philadelphia especially the zoo,  historical sites, and attending Phillies games.  Marlin also enjoyed showing them the sites of Vineland and of course Atlantic City. Marlin is also survived by a whole host of friends from Philadelphia and Vineland as well as canine Buster.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025 at 11:00 AM in Siloam Cemetery, 550 N. Valley Ave. Vineland, where Marlin will be laid to rest with his partner and husband Bill.

A celebration of life will be held following the graveside services at Eastlyn Golf Course, Greenview Inn, 4049 Italia Ave. Vineland, NJ 08361.

Memorial donations may be made in Marlin's memory to SJ Regional Animal Shelter, 1244 N. Delsea Drive Vineland, New Jersey 08360.

Marlin's services have been entrusted to the Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home, Vineland.
