Ramon Nuez Rodriguez, 85 years old, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at the Bayshore Community Hospital, in Holmdel, NJ. Mr. Rodriguez was born on July 22, 1929, in the Piletas area of Lares, Puerto Rico, to the late Jacinto Nuez and Rosa Rodriguez. Ramon had a younger brother, Rafael Rivera, and a sister, Virginia. He was a long-time resident of Vineland before moving to Chicago, where he resided until very recently, when he returned to New Jersey. Ramon started working early at the age of 15 for Genelectric Rayos-X, S.A., Inc., in Puerto Rico, before moving in the early 1950s to Florida, and then soon after to Vineland. In 1952, while still in Puerto Rico, he had a son, Heriberto Nuez, with Gladys Alvarado. After settling in Vineland, he met and married Zaida Custodio in 1955. Together they had three children: Eva Rodriguez Sorrell, born in 1956, Ramon Rodriguez, Jr., born in 1962, and Edwin Rodriguez, born in 1964. In Vineland, Ramon worked in the garment industry, was part owner of a small convenience store, and owned a supply truck from which he sold merchandise to migrant workers. Ramon was a handsome man with great personal charm who loved to socialize and made all kinds of friends easily. In 1976, Ramon moved to Chicago where he lived for 38 years, primarily in the Pilsen and Humboldt Park neighborhoods. His mother Rosa, brother Rafael, and son Heriberto had moved from Puerto Rico to Chicago many years before, and Ramon moved to Chicago to join them after separating from his wife Zaida, who continued to live in Vineland with the children. In Chicago, Ramon lived close to his brother Rafael, his sister-in-law Elvira, and his nieces and nephew, in Pilsen. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren by Heriberto, whose family lived for some time at Humboldt Park, where Ramon went to live at the Center Home for Hispanic Elderly when he could no longer live alone. Ramon worked and retired from a company that manufactured supplies for pets. After having a stroke in May, Ramon returned to New Jersey to be closer to his surviving children. He passed away peacefully with his children around him. Ramon was predeceased by father Jacinto, mother Rosa, sister Virginia, son Heriberto, and brother Rafael. Ramon is survived by Heriberto 's wife - daughter-in-law Maria Nuez - and grandchildren Teresa Nuez, Margie Nuez, Heriberto Nuez Jr., Carlos Nuez, Mariluz Nuez, Angel Nuez, and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his daughter Eva Rodriguez Sorrell and her husband Kenneth Sorrell, Sr., and grandchildren Kenneth Sorrell, Jr., and Kelsey Sorrell; his son Ramon Rodriguez, Jr., and grandchildren Belveline Elise Rodriguez and Ray Anthony Rodriguez; and by his son Edwin Rodriguez, and Thomas Atkins, Jr. A funeral home visitation will take place at the Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home at 1024 East Landis Avenue, Vineland, NJ, on Friday, December 19, 2014 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm, and Saturday, December 20, 2014, from 11:00 - 1:00 pm.
