WALTER BURSHTIN Engineering Manager, Community Volunteer Walter Burshtin, 84, of Richland, NJ passed away on March 7, 2012. He was the son of the late Michael and Catherine (Dziuba) Burshtin, and was born in Philadelphia, PA on Jan. 20, 1928. Walter was raised in Philadelphia, and attended Northeast High School. An accomplished accordion player, he was a member of the Avalon and Woodland string bands marching in the New Year's Mummers parades, as well as a band member performing at the numerous Ukranian social clubs in the Philadelphia area. Walter was one of the last draftees in World War II, and trained in the US Army artillery, becoming a gunner in the 533rd Rocket Field Artillery Battalion of the Fourth Army, and served in Alaska. While in the services he suffered disabling knee injuries from a runaway rocketry carriage, and underwent a long convalescence in the US Naval Hospital in Philadelphia. Following his discharge, Walter obtained an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering from Temple University in 1949. He later enrolled in Drexel University and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, and a Master of Science in Engineering Management. He was a Registered Professional Engineer and Professional Planner in New Jersey. Upon his marriage in 1952 to Rose (Presiazny), he moved to his wife's family farm in Richland. Walter had a long career in design and management of electronic component production lines for products such as Philco televisions, the Sergeant and Corporal army field rockets, military radio and radar sets, computer terminals, and stock market quotation systems. He was then employed by the State of New Jersey, first in Treasury department capital construction, and later as Chief of the Bureau of Solid Waste Management in the NJ DEP. Walter was an active Richland area volunteer, serving as firefighter and President of the Richland Volunteer Fire Co., lector at St. Joseph Church, and assisting area Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops. He had several hobbies including gardening, fishing, boating, Civil War history, reading and travel. Having built his home himself, he was an accomplished tradesman and frequently assisted his relatives and neighbors on various construction projects. In his later retirement he became an avid volunteer in the restoration of the battleship USS New Jersey and then regularly served as a tour docent. Walter is survived by his son Michael L. Burshtin (and wife Linda M. "Lynn") of Richland; two daughters, Michele Sainsott (and husband Mark) of Vineland, and Karen Thomas of Absecon; two step-daughters, Ealita "Lee" Browning of Palermo, and Linda Weiler of Marlton; and grandchildren Norrel and Ryan Sainsott, Lauren and Robert Thomas, Justin and Victoria Browning, and Michael and Otto Weiler. He was predeceased by his first wife Rose E. (Presiazny) and second wife Catherine (Logwinuk), and a brother William (and wife Elizabeth). Visitation will be held on Friday, March 9, 2012 from 7:00-9:00pm at the Wainwright-Bernhardt Funeral Home, 1024 E. Landis Ave. Vineland. Also on Saturday from 9:00-10:00am at the Church. A Roman Catholic funeral liturgy will be held on Saturday, March 10. 2012, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church (St. Padre Pio parish), 736 Union Road, East Vineland, NJ. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memorial Park, Millville, NJ.
